By now, you’ve heard the terrible news regarding the 7.0 earthquake hitting just off Haiti’s capital city of Port au Prince.  Haitian government officials estimate upwards of between 100,000 – 500,000 dead from the destruction.  Relief funds are popping up all over, while traditional sources of help are mobilizing to go into Haiti.  Everybody is asking you to help them help Haiti!!!!

One of my friends on Twitter asked me if I might be able to put together something FAST to help.  I’m just one guy, and frankly do not have a lot of financial resources to spend.  I do, however, have time.  And ideas….

Here’s a simple one….

Give someone the shirt off your back.  Literally.

How to give your shirt (or pants or dress or shoes or outfit) up:

  1. If you are a celebrity, notable personality, an individual with a large following and dedicated friends and fans, or just plain adventurous, stop and read.  Now.
  2. Choose a charity that is currently helping Haiti.  I have listed a few at the bottom of this post if you don’t have a favorite…
  3. Take out your smartphones and take a picture of the outfit you are wearing.  Stand in a mirror if you have to.  Make it a good, clear shot.  Upload it to Twitpic, YFrog or TweetPhoto with the following comment “I’m about to auction off the shirt I’m wearing to help the people of Haiti #sellmyshirt”  Please include the hashtag #sellmyshirt in your tweets to spread this out on Twitter and trend it!   NOTE: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YFROG OR TWEETPHOTO, AS THEY ALLOW FOR FAR MORE COMMENTS UNDER THE PHOTO – THANKS TO @BUZZEDITION FOR CORRECTING ME!
  4. This is optional, but you can also contact me via Twitter DM and announce yourself.  Please provide me a link to your photo and a short description of the outfit.  The better the description, the higher the bid might go, so be creative and honest!  Please also let me know your chosen charity so people will know where they money needs to go.  If I’m not following you, just @mention me so I can do so.  After all, you’re wonderful for doing this for Haiti, and deserve my follow!!!
  5. I would be happy to place a link to your image here, along with who you are, your outfit’s description, and a link to your charity’s donation site.  That way, you can always send people back to this site to find out what is going on and how to help…  A short URL to this post is http://bit.ly/4T0hdL if you’d like to save space on your tweet…
  6. You will be free to use the Hell out of social media to send out a link to your photo and tell them what you are doing, what you are selling, and why.  Tell everyone about your charity, and how to see the outfit on your photo service.  Tell them how to bid on your shirt (see details below.)  Feel free to send them back to this site to learn more.  Encourage your followers to RT your photo’s URL to their followers, telling them what is going on, and how to bid…

LIST OF THOSE CURRENTLY AUCTIONING OFF THEIR SHIRTS

How to bid on something:

  1. Auctioneers/sellers decide how long they will accept bids and will tweet that out to followers.  It is recommended that shirt-sellers also let me know auction deadlines, so I can place the information on this site for others to discover on their own.
  2. Bidders donate by leaving a comment on the desired seller’s photo page. Forget the link address? Simply come back to this site and find it! Comment bids should include the amount of the bid they are willing to pay to the celebrity’s stated charity should they win the bidding war on your outfit.
  3. You are not allowed to donate in the name of another Twitter user account.  All photo page bid comments must be performed from YOUR account.
  4. When the shirt-seller ends the bidding and chooses the highest bid, they are free to make a final announcement on Twitter. In the event of a tied highest bid when bidding is cut off, the owner of the shirt shall determine who won by whatever means they’d like.  Again, you can let me know when a winning bid is chosen as well, so I can announce the winner and the winning bid on this site, and help you tweet it out….

If your bid is chosen as winner:

  1. Winning bids shall be contacted by the seller directly by whatever personal and private method they’d like.  Shirt owner shall then wait for you to provide your confirmation number for the online transaction you promised in your winning image page bid.
  2. Sellers reserve the right to verify your donation’s online transaction confirmation number(s.) and reserve the right to take another bid should yours prove unverifiable, or you fail to complete the donation as agreed in a timely manner, as decided by seller.

So come on!  Who is game?  Who is daring enough, caring enough to give up the very shirt on their back to help so many people suffering right now in Haiti?

Let’s get this ball rolling by sending a link to this post to every celebrity, musician, comedian or personality you can find on Twitter and asking them to consider this option to help those so in need in Haiti, please!

I’ve got some Haiti earthquake tragedy news to share. God, this has been a terrible disater. I’d been keeping an eye on what’s been going on because I had family there. Since the 13th, I’d been waiting to hear when the aid and relief I knew we could offer would be released and given to the Haitian community to treat the Haiti native people and tourists there. To keep other people informed because I was lacking a good source of information rather than the same videos of reporters and 30 second videos on CNN and my local news I built a website from the ground up for it and got it fully working yesterday. For more details on the tragedy please just follow the URL attached to my comment. This really has been a tragedy in Haiti and those that want or need to know more should check it out. I’ve listed some resources whereby people can donate as well. God bless and please keep the people in Haiti in your prayers and hope for their survival or do more than hope, help them.
